    Crisis Summary — 14 April 2026

The 2026 Irish fuel crisis, triggered by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, has caused widespread fuel shortages across Ireland. Protests led by farmers, hauliers and transport workers have been ongoing since 7 April 2026.

As of 14 April, approximately 650 of Ireland's 1,500 filling stations remain without fuel. The National Emergency Coordination Group says supply chains will take a number of days to return to normal.

Key developments today: Major blockades at Whitegate Oil Refinery, O'Connell Street, Port of Galway, Shannon Foynes Port and Rosslare Europort have all been cleared following large-scale Garda operations. However, fresh slow-moving convoys have appeared on the M50 southbound, M1 southbound (Co Louth) and M9 at Athy (Co Kildare) despite the government's €505 million support package. Sinn Féin has tabled a motion of no confidence in the Government this week.

The €505m package includes a further 10c cut in excise on petrol and diesel (effective midnight Tuesday, subject to Oireachtas approval), a 2.4c reduction on green diesel, direct payments to hauliers and farmers, and deferred carbon tax increases. A Dublin protest spokesperson said protesters "achieved something small" but has "no control" over further protests.
